October Turns Pink

Dear San Patricio Community,

Throughout October, we see the color pink in many places: in campaigns, buildings, shirts, ribbons, and social media posts. Behind that color is an important message: raising awareness about breast cancer, remembering the importance of taking care of our health, and supporting those who are going through this illness.

This message also has a place within our school community. Whether we are students, parents, teachers, or staff members, there is something we can all learn from this month. For our students, it may not be about understanding every detail of the disease, but about learning from an early age that health deserves our attention and that the way we treat someone who is going through a difficult time matters.

Sometimes supporting someone can be very simple: asking how they are doing, listening without interrupting, being patient, or avoiding comments that might hurt. Our students practice many of these things every day with their friends, classmates, teachers, and families. Empathy does not begin in adulthood; it is something we learn and practice from an early age.

It is also a good opportunity to talk about something that applies at every age: learning to pay attention to our bodies, speaking up when something does not feel right, and turning to the adults or professionals who can help us. Taking care of ourselves should never be something we feel embarrassed about or keep putting off.

Pink October also reminds us that behind every diagnosis there is a person and a family. Many members of our community may know someone who has experienced breast cancer closely. Wearing a pink ribbon can be a meaningful symbol, but what matters most is what we do with that message: staying informed, taking care of our health, and becoming more aware of the people around us.

To our students, I want to say something in particular: you do not have to wait until you are adults to make a difference in someone’s life. Being thoughtful, supporting a friend, showing respect, and learning to take care of yourselves may seem like small actions, but they matter.

This October, may pink remind us of exactly that: to take care of ourselves, to pay attention to others, and to understand that a community also becomes stronger when it knows how to support one another.

Octubre se pinta de rosa

Querida comunidad San Patricio:
