Remembering Is Also Part of Our Story
Dear San Patricio Community,
Next Monday, November 2, Mexico celebrates Día de Muertos, a tradition that has been part of our culture for centuries and has been passed down from one generation to the next as a very meaningful way to remember those who are no longer with us.
It is a celebration filled with elements that are closely tied to our identity: cempasúchil flowers, photographs, candles, papel picado, pan de muerto, and, of course, the altars. But behind all of these symbols is something much simpler and deeper: remembering, sharing stories, and keeping present the people who have been part of our lives.
At school, we are also working with this tradition. Our PAP Department is in charge of creating a Día de Muertos altar, a project that gives our students the opportunity to connect with an important Mexican tradition and understand the meaning behind each of its elements.
I especially value that our students experience these traditions not only as something they read about in a book or see once a year, but as part of the history and culture of the country they live in. For our younger students, it may begin with the colors, flowers, and stories. As they grow older, they can also begin to understand the importance of preserving our traditions and passing them on to future generations.
We are part of an international community, and we want our students to know the world, but also to recognize and value what identifies us as Mexicans. Understanding our traditions helps us know where we come from and gives us something meaningful to share with people from other places.
This Día de Muertos is also a good opportunity to remember, as a family, those who have been important in our lives, share a story about them, and keep alive a tradition that continues to hold a special place in Mexican culture.
Warm regards,

Recordar también es parte de nuestra historia
Querida comunidad San Patricio,

Día de Muertos
